Make 2012 the Best Year You Have Ever Had

January 4th, 2012 by

Last year I mentioned that a search of Amazon yielded some 1,500 books on the topic of the law of attraction.

And with so many books written on this method of change you would think that everybody would have the relationships they want, the income they want and the level of health that they want.

But as we all know this is not the case.

Now of course there are many people who are not aware of this concept. But I am talking about the people who have bought the books, have listened to the CDs and watched the videos.

Why is it not working for so many of these people?

It seems to me that with so many books on the subject that there must be something happening that causes this law not to work. So I wrote a lot about the law of attraction and how our world view affects how well this law will work in our lives.

I want to continue that discussion this year because it seems to me that a fundamental yet simple shift in our world view will generate amazingly positive results.

What do Words have to do with it?

The law of attraction basically says that whatever we hold in our thoughts will become manifested.

Now that is a very straight forward concept. And I believe that all the books can be summed up in a single sentence – “You are what you think and your world is what you think it is”.

What is so frustrating to me is that for everyone that knows this “law” why aren’t they rich, vibrantly healthy and in great relationships. I know I am repeating myself about this frustration but I want everyone to have the life they want and deserve.

Since I am not a mind reader I have to listen to the words that people use to understand their thoughts and mental processes.

What I have found is that there are many words that we use that demonstrate to me that our thoughts are not always geared to self fulfillment.

So let’s use an example.

I speak with a client and they tell me how they are diligently applying the law of attraction to increase their business income. They describe how they make affirmation lists and how they meditate on seeing their business grow.

Here is how they might describe what they do.

“I wake in the morning and the first thing I do is try to visualize how I want the day to go. I try and set my intentions so that all of the good things I want will come to me. Several times during the day I take a few minutes and try to bring into focus the things that I want to happen. I even take some time out of the day and try and meditate so that I can make full use of the law of attraction.”

When I listen to my client describe what they do my mind is drawn to their use of the word “try”.

I believe that there are a number of “killer words” that show our underlying thought processes.

When I hear someone use the word “try” it says to me that even though they are doing what the books say to do, their underlying belief is that it will not work.

Because in my mind the word “try” means an unsuccessful attempt. Or in other words, they believe that their work at change will really fail.

So their efforts are doomed from the start.

What to do?

As this year progresses I will write on each of the “killer words” that I find limits our progress. I have worked with many clients in identifying the limiting words used most often in their speech.

Once identified, simply becoming aware of this usage and then eliminating these words has produced amazing positive changes.

So to start I would encourage everyone to look at the words that they use and see how many times you use the word “try”.

If you find that you are simply not able to eliminate this word from your vocabulary there may be some underlying energetic bloc k that needs to be worked with.

If there is an energetic block feel free to contact me and we can discuss how best to proceed.

Exercises for Spiritual Growth

November 9th, 2011 by

One of the main categories on my blog is “spiritual growth”.

Obviously I think it is an important topic.

I have written numerous articles on the topic and in the podcast section I have meditations designed to help in that area.

I thought I would take this post and explore a number of websites that offer exercises to help with spiritual growth.

What Other Blogs are Saying

One approach to spiritual growth is through the age old tradition of Yoga. There are many styles of Yoga and each claim to be the way.

As with all paths there are many ways and the reason there are many different schools is because the world is filled with many different personalities. We chose a path based in large part on whether it fits our personality or not.

That being said, Yoga schools generally follow the broad outline of the Eight Fold Path.

The following website offers a good summary of the basic principals behind the Yogic exercises for spiritual growth.

In terms of a very simple breathing exercise the following article covers all the bases. The exercise is very easy to do and can form the basis of an advanced breathing routine. Besides the explanation in the article there is a nice question and answer section at the end.

Another exercise for spiritual growth is a retreat. Retreats can take on many forms and are based on spiritual practices whether religious or sectarian.

One form of retreat that is popular is a retreat into silence and meditation and prayer. The following article has a religious foundation but is a nice introduction to a retreat into silence.

The above sites are just a small sampling of what can be found. You do not have to join a cult or follow a guru or join a religious order to move along the path of spiritual growth.

The exercises are simple to do. But difficult to do consistently over time.

The goal of all of these exercises is to be able to look for “the kingdom of heaven within”. And then to be able to bring that knowledge back out into your life in the world.

The Tapestry of Life

In my last article I was talking about whether the Law of Attraction really works. And the answer that I put forth was that it works or does not work depending on your world view.

I said that if your world view does not allow for the existence of what you are working on then you will have very poor success using the LOA for manifestation.

In that article I gave the classic example of an optimist and a pessimist looking at a glass that is half filled with water. As the examples illustrates, there are two people looking at the exact same thing and have two entirely different interpretations of what they see.

In this article I want to expand on that example to show why I think all of our worlds are personally created and that this personal creation is what make the Law of Attraction successful or not.

An Infinite Number of Worlds

In the optimist vs pessimist example it can be argued that their interpretations are really a result of different personalities rather than anything related to seeing different worlds. I would disagree, but let’s look a little further.

I want you to look at the two pictures below. Many of you may have seen them before but that’s OK. (If you want to see some more interesting pictures just do a search for “figure ground pictures”.)

vase

Depending on how you look at the pictures, the one on the left can be seen either as a vase or two male profiles looking at each other. The picture on the right can be seen either as a young women’s face in profile or as an old women with a large nose.

A psychologist would probably have interpretations concerning which of the pictures “popped” out first. My explanation is much broader.

My explanation says that the world is immensely complex and is made up of an infinite number of these figure ground relationships.

Look at the picture of the fabric at the top of this article. There are a number of different colored threads making up the design. I believe that if I asked 100 people what was the first colored thread that they saw I would get more than a few different answers.

That fabric has less than 20 different colored threads. What would happen if the number of possible variations jumped to 1000 or 100,000 or a million?

And let’s not forget that there are people who see the pattern running left to right and there are those that see the pattern running up and down.

What Does This Mean?

Imagine that the world is made of a figure/ground tapestry of infinite possibilities. And just like the two pictures or the simple tapestry in my illustrations your world view will be the one that “popped” out first.

And that is the world that you live in. It may be the same or it may be very different from the world that the person standing next to you lives in.

  • Now suppose person “A” pops out a world from the tapestry that is all the bright colored threads and all of the bright colored opportunities and all of the bright colored relationships.
  • Now suppose person “B” pops out a world from the tapestry that is all of the dark colored threads and all of the dark colored opportunities and all of the dark colored relationships.
  • Now suppose that both people use the Law of Attraction to manifest a high paying job in a field they like and with people they are happy to work with.
  • Now suppose that both people have studied the LOA and have equal skills in visualization and concentration. And both have a 90% ability to manifest what they want manifested.

Which person do you think will be more successful in the creation of their stated desire?

Person “A” sees a world is filled with opportunity while person “B” sees a world that has very little opportunity.

In my opinion person “A” will find that the Law of Attraction does work and person “B” will likely be disappointed and feel that the Law of Attraction does not work.

As I stated at the beginning of this article, manifesting through the Law of Attraction will only work if the world that you live in contains the raw material from which you can build your dreams.

What to Do

If you believe that the world is made of a figure/ground tapestry of infinite possibilities then the only thing to do is to “pop” out another world view.

Of course this is not that easy to do and takes a lot of dedication and patient practice.

But it can be done.

In my next article I want to discuss some methods of creating a new world view.
